Report investigating support for carers - June 2017

Carers UK estimate that nationally 6.8 million people provide unpaid care for a disabled, seriously-ill or older person in the UK.

The University of Sheffield 2015 ‘Valuing Carers Report’ 1 says that Carers save the state £132 billion a year, which is close to the cost of a second NHS.

They recognise that Carers’ contribution to the economy was 7% higher in 2015 than in 2011.

Carers UK said those providing high levels of care are twice as likely to have poor health as those without caring responsibilities (2004)2.

North Somerset’s health and wellbeing strategy document (Joint Strategic Needs Assessment)3 defines a Carer as someone who provides unpaid care for someone who is disabled, frail, ill, has mental health issues or substance misuse problems.

It states that without this support from unpaid Carers many of those individuals who are being cared for would require formal care packages or care home placements.
